Prepare to feel lost when shifting careers

Five reminders to guide your way forward

  1. Your job is not your identity. Your job is not your identity. Your job is not your identity. It’s worth repeating.
  2. Being “lost” is an opportunity to try new things about people, life, and careers. Reframe the situation from a disadvantage to an advantage. Ask: What can be learned here, at this juncture of my life?
  3. Build a diverse network and if you have one, nurture it further. Being alone and with your own thoughts can lead to poor physical and mental health. It’s summer. Spend at least an hour of each day outside.
  4. Seek inspiration for new ideas, or opportunities to see the same things in a new perspective. For example, take photos of graffiti, posters, buildings, and parks. Share with your community back home.
  5. Use the Spaghetti Method: try new things simultaneously, with good intentions. Like pasta sticking to the wall, one of these hobbies will eventually stick, and flourish.
